KNIGHTS ORDER OF SAN MARINO
(Ordine Equetre di San Marino)
Established in August 13, 1859, as an award for outstanding civil or military merit.
The Grand Cross is bestowed only to chiefs of foreign states. This Order is
named in honor of Saint Marino, stone – cutter from what is now Yugoslavia, who
fled religious persecution and started a community at Mount Titano (now San Marino).
THE BADGE: It is a gold-rimmed white enamel cross with a gold ball extending from
the three lower arms of the cross. Between each arm of the cross appears a
gold tower. The center medallion portrays in color a portrait of San Marino
surrounded by a gold-rimmed and blue band inscribed SAN MARINO PROTETTORE.
On the reverse appears The Coat of Arms of San Marino surrounded by a gold and blue
band inscribed MERITO CIVILE MILITAIRE. The badge is suspended from a crown,
which is as curious as San Marino, the smallest Republic and one of the oldest in
Europe.
KNIGHTS ORDER OF SAINT AGATHA
(Ordine Equestri di Sant’ Agata)
Established in June 5, 1923 as an award, for civil or military, and given to both
natives and foreigners. This order that comes in five classes and was named
in honor of Saint Agatha, who is also a patron saint of San Marino.
BADGE: It is primarily composed of a gold-rimmed white enamel cross. Between
each arm of the cross appears a green and gold wreath. The center medallion
portrays in natural color on a gold background the head of Saint Agatha surrounded
by a gold-rimmed white band with the inscription SANT AGATA PROTETTRICE. The
reverse has the coat of arms of San Marino surrounded by the inscription BENE MERENTI,
which means deserving.
STAR: Observe of badge superimposed on eight pointed, gold and silver star.
RIBBON: Red moiré edged in gold with white stripe towards each edge.
